Do you love your teeth? Preventive care is the #1 way we can take good care of our teeth. They do so much for us: help us chew food, help us speak, keep the shape of our face, and give us a pleasing smile. Brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day is what we recommend for our patients. And there is another treatment that can help prevent tooth decay and provide an added layer of safety to your teeth. Keep reading to learn more about this simple service we offer.
Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating made from a dental material that we brush onto the molars to keep cavities from forming. The molars are especially susceptible to cavities. Your back teeth have a rough, uneven surface, with deep fissures and grooves that are your favorite hiding spot for debris and harmful bacteria. Sealants are shown to reduce the chance of decay on the molars by more than 80%.
Regardless of age, children and adults can benefit from sealants. It’s a quick and painless process. First, we clean and dry the tooth, then make the surface porous so that the sealant will bond securely. Once we apply the sealant, we harden it using a special light. It’s also tinted white so it blends in with the rest of your tooth, and the sealant should last about 5-25 years or more.
It’s still important to floss those back teeth, as the sealant doesn’t reach in between teeth. At Dental Care of Boca Raton, we want to prevent dental problems as much as possible because our goal is to keep your mouth healthy.
